The project develops an innovative wastewater-based pathogen surveillance system, combining PCR, WGS/NGS, metagenomics, and artificial intelligence (AI) tools Its goal is to identify and monitor viruses, bacteria, and antimicrobial resistance genes and provide real-time, actionable data to support public health decision-making.
Wastewater contains traces of pathogens that reflect the overall health status of the population. By systematically analyzing these signals, it becomes possible to obtain a comprehensive and non-invasive view of how infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance are spreading across entire communities.
Funding: European Commission, HADEA/2024/OP/0017 – Framework contracts to provide services and supplies to measure pathogens and pollutants of emerging concern in untreated wastewater samples as part of a global sentinel system.
