
Roberto Vergallo is a Tenured Assistant Professor in the software engineering field. His current research topics include the design and development of innovative customer experience (CX) for the banking field using the innovation lead by recent advancements in AI, IoT and DLT. As a side research topic, he is contributing to the foundation of the sustainable software engineering field, particularly focusing on Green AI methods and techniques. He has authored more than 50 scientific papers published in international journals, conference proceedings, and books.
In 2024 he has been a visiting researcher at TU Delft (The Netherlands) where he joined the Software Engineering Research Group (SERG), led by prof. Arie van Deursen, to contribute to the field of Green AI. In a previous position at University of Salento (Lecce, Italy) he has coordinated for 15 years the activities of the GSA-Lab, led by prof. Luca Mainetti.
His PhD thesis (2014) was on a model-driven Cloud architecture for the IoT. It was the result of an experience at the prestigious UCLA (Los Angeles, CA), after which he moved back to Italy and founded a spin-off company called Vidyasoft srl. With the spin-off he raised 200k€ from the industry for the result of his research, as well as receiving different grants and awards from banks and financial institutions.
In 2022-2023 he has worked closely with Bank of Italy, as he was admitted to both the MilanoHub program (AI for Fintech) and the first Italian Regulatory Sandbox. In 2023 he contributed to the public discussion on the Digital Euro project with the ECB by proposing his invention on an offline P2P payment protocol.
He is member of the editorial board for three international journals: MDPI Fintech, Journal on Information and Communication technology (JICT), and Journal of Telecommunication, Electronic and Computer Engineering (JTEC). In 2024 he has been part of the organizational committee of the 10th Italian Conference on ICT for Smart Cities and Communities (I-CiTies), where he has been the national coordinator of the Smart City University Challenge.
